Resources Upcycling

Water-gas shift reaction
of synthesis gas
CO + H2O → H2 + CO2

(∆H = -41 kJ/mol): Exothermic reaction

Waste-derived synthesis gas: produced by the gasification of MSW
-
Higher CO concentration (~38%, dry basis) compared to the general syngas produced from NG reforming (~9%, dry basis)
-
Contain impurities which acts as a poison to the catalyst (H2S, …)
WGS: Removal of CO and additional production of H2
-
CO: Act as a poison in fuel cells (requires < 10 ppm)
-
Biomass-derived syngas also has a similar characteristics, which shows high concentration of CO (~30%), and contain impurities
Extensive application is possible
Development of sulfur tolerant catalyst with high intrinsic activity to convert high concentration of CO is required
